President Rodrigo Duterte signed the Republic Act No. 10925 granting another 25-year franchise for GMA Network Inc. which operates TV channels, radio station, and online site, April 26.
The said bill allows GMA network to continue operating its channels and provides order to produce air time for public service announcements especially in times of crisis, emergency, and calamity.
GMA network is also encouraged to comply with the applicable labor standards while considering the nature of peculiarities of the broadcast industry.
Earlier in 2015, GMA network’s hired talents won a case against the TV network violating rule of law, contractual workers, given the nature of their job, should also be treated as a regular employee who is also entitled for security of tenure and other benefits.
GMA 7 has been sued by members of the talent association, for depriving them from law-madated benefits such as health care insurance and social services.
The RA No 10925 allows the President to temporarily take over the operations of GMA Network if in the best interest of the public.
On the other hand, rival network ABS-CBN also filed for their franchise insurance however it remains pending up to date.
The said network has been very vocal for criticizing and discrediting the President for his war on illegal drugs.
President Duterte’s negative rants against the said network has sparked concern among its stockholders, especially at this time where the network has pending franchise renewal.
